Also, thanks to those that submitted new additions to the list last week. Over a third of the below items are new and a lot of the original items have had newer information added onto them.)
People are always looking for something to do around here. Maybe you’re a transplant, unaware of what this area has to offer, or maybe you’re a lifelong resident, tired of the same old thing. Well friend, if you fall into the latter category, do not despair. There’s actually plenty of things to do in the Sacramento area – things of interest to almost any lifestyle, personality, or budget.
So, whether you’re an athlete, geek, eccentric, hipster, weirdo, sexual deviant or just a normal person looking for a new activity, below is a list of activities for you to try. Please note that it includes only activities that take place at least a few times a year – no one-off events or festivals here.

Bitcoin’s knack for volatility is old news, but how many assets are there that can rally a thousand dollars, and plummet a thousand dollars, all in a single day? Because that day came yesterday, the most noteworthy Bitcoin display since late 2017. Back then, its value grew to the dizzy heights of 20,000 dollars before a sharp, sharp decline. The crash left some investors riding off into the sunset with spectacular returns, but many others with financial PTSD. Now, the digital currency might be rekindling old form, catching a second wind this week to shoot up from $3000 to over $12000. Check the price right now. In true Bitcoin fashion, we bet it’s changed.
While non-believers continue to mock crypto, blockchain believers remain fiercely devoted to the cause. Tipping a widespread adoption across the financial world, they wait to be understood and hope to be proved right. As the debate heats up again now, market on-lookers are attributing the latest Bitcoin climb to both a weakening dollar and institutional go-ahead’s. Those are at least genuine drivers, the likes of which were harder to pinpoint two years ago.
With the G-20 commencing in Osaka, investors are also reminded of the uncertainty in the world. Marcus Swanepoel, CEO at crypto firm Luno, believes Bitcoin and Ethereum are “uncorrelated assets” to these kinds of world troubles that often plague stocks, providing a “quasi safe-haven option” to investors. One thing’s for sure, the hottest places to be right now are Silicon Valley and Wall Street, both two sides of the same bitcoin. Fasten your harnesses people, because we’re potentially in for a second ride on this rollercoaster.

Dr. Jason Ernst, CTO and Chief Networking Scientist  
Jason holds a PhD in the field of Mesh Networking and Heterogeneous Wireless Networks as well as a M.Sc. on Scheduling Techniques for Wireless Mesh Networks, both from the Applied Computing faculty at the University of Guelph. An adjunct professor at the University of Guelph, Jason has more than 30 published papers on wireless networks, cognitive agents, FPGAs, and soft-computing topics and has presented his research at international conferences around the world. Jason is the only Canadian member of the ACM Future of Computing Academy and a member of their executive committee. Prior to joining Left, Jason was the CTO of Redtree Robotics, which designed robots that made use of multiple radio technologies to ensure pervasive connectivity to each other and their operators.
 
Dr. David Wang, Applied Research Engineering Scientist  
Dr. Zehua Wang is the Chief Micropayment Scientist at RightMesh. He received Ph.D. degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada. He received his master and bachelor degrees in Computer Engineering and Software Engineering, respectively. He holds a research fellow position in UBC. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed book chapters and papers in topics of mobile ad-hoc networks, blockchain technology, the Internet of Things, and the fifth-generation wireless networks. He has expertise of using optimization and game theories to solve economic problems. He was a recipient of Four-Year-Fellowship and awarded the Graduate Support Initiative Award at UBC. In industry, he has about 10 years experiences of software development. Academic Research:

 
Academic research has been core to the design and development of RightMesh thus far, and will continue to be a key driver for us in the future. RightMesh works closely with Universities on academic research on mesh networks, blockchain technology, and payment channels. We are working on research with the University of British Columbia on density simulation and payment channel development. Since early 2017, we’ve been conducting research on mesh networks and connectivity in Arctic / remote regions with:
 
 
We've received grants from NSERC, MITACS and CIRA to support pilot programs thus far and are submitting a MITACS cluster grant to support over 100 graduate student units over the next 3-5 years. This research covers everything from how to design relevant mesh apps in the communities the mesh is operating in, to performance evaluation of the network protocols, to scalability of micropayment channels.
 

Technology:

 
It is also important how the mesh is designed for scalability reasons. Most mesh networking solutions are built around a store and forward and broadcast mechanism. This mechanism is not scalable and congests the network causing complete breakdown of the network. Even a small amount of devices can quickly cause exponential traffic resulting in extremely high delay and low effective throughput for apps running on broadcast protocols. In the RightMesh network, devices directly communicate with another device, and make smart routing decisions along the way.
 
RightMesh implements autonomous role topology/mesh creation layer - which means devices in the RightMesh network will autonomously detect each other and connect - user intervention in the network role is minimized .

We don't broadcast data. We compute a route between devices. Our protocol was built to use multiple paths (most use a single path and have long recovery times on a broken connection). The RightMesh network protocols can failover, or use multiple paths at the same time. RightMesh doesn't require the phone to be rooted. RightMesh doesn't require extra hardware. RightMesh can share existing Wi-Fi or Cellular Data, many others can only share Cellular Data.

Hello, First, congratulations on the big idea! I'm definitely a supporter. (1/2) My question is how far are you into testing your mesh network?

 
Thank you! We’ve spent the last 1.5 years or so building the protocol stack from the ground up, and so most of the testing that has been done has been around testing the functionality of the stack - including node discovery, single-hop and multi-hop communication, multi-path routing, forming mesh networks with heterogeneous wireless links, and app integration.
 
And over time, we steadily have been improving our end-to-end reliable communications protocol. The protocol originally achieved somewhere on the order of a few kbps when we first started because we did e2e acks on every packet. We have since moved to sliding window and selective ack mechanism which has allowed the performance to climb closer to the Mbps range. However, we still have more work to do in order to achieve the theoretical maximums of the individual links (and even faster if combining links).
 
In terms of testing of the scale of a RightMesh network, we've tested with up to 10 hops on a single path, but can likely support more. Right now the largest offline mesh we've had is 30 devices, limited only by the number of devices we had available at that moment in time.
 
Building a performance evaluation framework is one of our next immediate and important tasks, where we can evaluate the performance of the network under various test conditions - for example how the network behaves based on density, and how does the number of hops impact the response time and data that flows through the network.
 

(2/2) Can I assume I'll only be able to participate if I'm in the surrounding locations? For example: Someone in Indonesia is using RightMesh to try and connect to the internet. Is there a possibility for me to help them if I live in a different country? Thank you and keep up the good work.

 
To be a participant in a RightMesh network, you will have to be in close vicinity with another RightMesh powered node (smartphone) in order to be connected to a network. However, it will be possible for community members to operate devices that provide a “superpeer” layer. These would be fixed nodes with stable, reliable, and ideally fast internet connections. They would provide relaying between different geographically separate meshes - for instance between two neighbourhoods that are too far apart for one mesh to cover them both. They would be required to provide tokens in order to facilitate the channels that need to be made between the buyers and sellers. This would allow them to charge a fee for having their tokens locked up in the channels.
 
We will also open source the superpeer, so people will be able to work off our reference superpeer implementation and build their own custom superpeers. This would let them control the strategy the superpeer uses to allocate tokens into channels. We expect to have a release of the superpeer which supports payment channels by next week. At this point in time the solution is proof-of-concept stage, but some testing has been done to support two meshes communicating with each other through a superpeer where the data seller in each mesh is compensated by buyers in each mesh.

What do you see as the biggest challenge with taking your technology to market and hitting your usegrowth targets?

 
Density is the biggest challenge of mesh technologies, and one of the reasons why token economies are required to incentivize users to share their signal when it is available.
 
We are looking to bring in users into the RightMesh ecosystem through the work they do in the network, and provide them economic incentives that will encourage further action. What defines work? Being a part of a relay node in the network for instance - that reduces barriers to entry. Or incentivizing users for taking actions in the app or to consume content such as ads. The more opportunities there are for users to earn, the more people that will join, the more developers that will join the ecosystem, leading to more opportunities, and the network effects loop should grow stronger.

(1/3) What is the theoretical maximum mesh size?

 
There isn't really a theoretical limit. We don't have any hard caps on devices in our code, however locally there may be limitations from individual phones. For instance, I've seen some phones in hotspot mode which only support 6 clients connected to it. On other phones sometimes, as few as 3-4 BT connections. So there are some constraints on the topology and the maximum number of connections one device may have, but it is limited more by the devices, the chipset and Android, rather than our software. We can also get around some of these limitations still using our switching technology, however, this will have a noticeable impact on delay.
 

(2/3) Does the transfer rate for users slow as the mesh size increases?

 
This is less a function of the number of users, or devices, and more a function of the demand on the network. A network with many devices and few users actually requesting traffic may perform better than a small network where all of the users are requesting lots of traffic. There is some overhead in the protocol to maintain the connectivity of devices, however this will be minimal in impact compared to the load of traffic from all of the devices. It also depends on where the traffic is going. If it internal to the mesh it may be possible with a dense mesh that RightMesh could support high throughput internally. The bottlenecks would likely occur in cases where there is lots of traffic which requires the Internet, and there are too few people willing to sell or donate Internet data into the network. Compared to other meshes howevever because RightMesh can support multiple paths, we can split the load across all available Internet connections rather than doing something more naiive like rely only on the closest one, for example.
 

(3/3) How do you plan to test a large scale mesh prior to launch?

 
There is lots that we can do with simulation, or combining simulations with some real devices. We also have a large team in Bangladesh that can help support field tests in some very different environment that we are used to in Vancouver.
 
Further, we are working with researchers at UBC and Guelph so that graduate students can apply some of the latest research methods in simulation and performance evaluation to RightMesh. (I myself have a PhD that relied heavily in this area, and we have several other PhDs on the team who can provide expertise to graduate students in this area. We are also working with some other top researchers in this area who will help in ensure we are straining and breaking the network as much as possible before launch).
 
To be more specific, it will be a combination of stressing various components of the system one at a time, along with tests that stress all of the components at once. We are also building software that can automate various scenarios to test how the phones and the library can handle different topologies and connectivity. Before we consider it ready for launch however, we'll need some wide scale tests with real devices and real traffic. This will likely happen by working with friendly partners who believe in the benefits of what the mesh can provide in very localized applications (think a train schedule app in a crowded city for example). This will inevetiably result in parts of the protocol breaking, which will iteratively repair.
 
Once we are satisfied that the network as a whole can maintain stability, tokens properly account for the data being used (verified on the public testnets), and that users of these early partner apps are having a good user experience, we will deploy to the public network.

Have you had direct interest from large enterprise clients wishing to use the mesh technology in their apps/content strategy as yet, or are you having to reach out to them to generate interest?

 
Yes, RightMesh has been receiving direct inquiries from major corporations and organizations every day. These companies are largely interested in reaching emerging markets and regions where connectivity is an issue, and has been inaccessible until now. Mesh technology, being so new, will enable new types of applications to emerge that have not previously been possible, so proof of concepts for both RightMesh and partners will be a key focus. We’re actively in discussion with companies who are interested in integrating RightMesh into mobile applications, dApps, IoT devices and other hardware products to develop pilot projects.
 
In addition to these inbound inquiries, we have an outbound strategy as well, where we’ve identified key verticals that would benefit from mesh enabled applications. In the near term, over the next year while we harden the RightMesh protocol, we plan to focus on working with partners who provide services like emergency communications, distance education, medical services, and messaging applications, to name a few.
 
We see the need to work with a variety of different types of partners from international NGOs to brand names in order to test various use cases (ex. emergency medical alerts or content distribution from content providers). Our partnership strategy will evolve over time as our protocol matures.

First let me say this product is revolutionary, I know if availability is solved there is no reason not to use this. My question is regarding your choice of an erc20 token, wasn't it more suitable to choose something like IOTA for constant payment of internet access? Are you planning for the payments to be made every second per MB consumed or something like that? Thanks

First, for context, let’s explain why and how RightMesh is using blockchain technology. Firstly, the protocol is integrated with Ethereum to uniquely identify each node (smartphone/device) in the mesh network by assigning it a MeshID in a similar way that a MAC address is assigned an IP address. Secondly, participation in the network is incentivized through an ERC20 token, called RMESH, and the network uses a custom implementation of µRaiden to allow for micropayments of micro amounts of data in the network.
 
We are supporters of Ethereum and its strong development community. Scalability and reducing transaction fees are two of the biggest challenges that the Ethereum community is working on now. But, while that is happening, we have also been looking at our own protocol design to minimize the need of Ethereum transactions and tackle the problem of scalability.
 
Every microtransaction that occurs on a RightMesh network does not need to be secured on the blockchain - that is vastly inefficient. That’s why we’ve been relying on a payment channel design based on µRaiden that allow micro transactions to occur in the network between nodes without transaction fees, and not being dependant on the blockchain for every transaction. We think this has to be a joint community effort, and so we’ve published the work we’ve done in porting the µRaiden libraries to Java to be used in our Android libraries.
 
We also believe that being a part of the Ethereum community also means contributing to it and helping it to move forward.

If Google/Alphabet succeed with Project Loon, will this damage RightMesh's market?

 
If Google’s Project Loon succeeds, it would be a win for everyone and the planet. The same goes for the SpaceX satellite initiatives, the OneWeb project, Facebook’s global internet initiatives, 5G networks, and the success of other mesh networking technologies in the blockchain space.
 
We each share the goal of bringing connectivity to the nearly 4 billion people who do not have access to internet and connectivity. At the end of the day, we, RightMesh, aim to lift millions out of poverty by providing them with access to the societal and economic benefits afforded by the internet and access to information. This is not something that can be solved by one entity. It will take the combination of different solutions and approaches to make this a reality.
 
One major strength of RightMesh is that we can solve last mile connectivity, which is incidentally complementary to many other projects in the space. There is a good opportunity for us to potentially collaborate with some forward-thinking wireless companies, MVNOs, and corporations working on global connectivity projects, to provide last mile delivery.

The OpenVisionZ Blog #11 Mr. Peter Panda the Bear Cat Gave Me Toxoplasmosis

his is just going to be a freestyle blog about the heroism resulting in the assisted rescue of Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Catsubsequently giving me Toxoplasmosis.

So I have a cat, the cats name is Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Cat he is a feral cat and has probably given me Toxoplasmosis. The Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Cat story starts with him being stuck about 60 feet up in a bulimic tree right outside of my window. Panda was crying like the little bitch, so I say that to give some audio perspective
Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Cat likes to sex up my feetsies and cuddle at night, the fucking my feet he probably derived from me, I like to give him a little tickle on the nuts once and a while and that usually gets him fired up, but not to digress I am going to explain why and what I did to adopt this little fucking bear cat and save him from the tree he was stuck in, and the reason why I think he has given me Toxoplasmosis and could be the first Professional Colombian Jiu-Jitsu Feline Champion of America
So the day starts off with smoking pot as usual, I started to hear a faint cat cry and then it got a bit louder, so I look out my window and what do you know there is a cat stuck in the tree next door and it's kinda wedged in a crux of the tree what I would would call the vagina of the tree branch, and this cat was crying like a little bitch, so I paid it no mind and carried on with my weed smoking and shut the window cause who gives a fuck that a cats in a tee they do that for birds and a panorama vista.
So a few hours went by and the crying was getting more annoying and more annoying and I decided to throw rocks at him...I'm kidding I didn't throw rocks, I threw feathers and cotton balls, I just went to sleep and figured he would be out of the tree in the morning. The next day comes and I wake up to this cat crying and meowing away and I figured he was probably doing that all night and I realized this little mother fucker was not only a bitch, he was a bitch stuck in a tree vagina who is too stupid to get down. 📷Cat Food Deals from Amazon📷📷I had no choice but to leave for work and I felt a little bad so I opened the window and yelled out "Hey you little bitch knock it off and get down from that bulimic vagina crux"
📷So the work day was over, I work nights, when I got home at 3:30 am I heard a faint meow and as I walked into my backyard the security light popped on and it made the little bitch panda start to meow louder and louder, I looked up into the tree and I looked at this cat who was stuck looking down at me meowing and I started to wonder how dumb was this animal?
So I said "you a lil bitch get your little bitch ass down here and meow like that to my face" and I went upstairs and went to sleep. So day 3 comes and this cat would not shut up all night, it was meowing like a maniac cat stuck in a tree all night. So I wake up light a joint and make a coffee and all I could hear was "meow meow mmmmeeeeowwwwww" it was getting very annoying, the fact that a cat was stuck in a tree was starting to become a bit sad. I opened my window and he was about 25-30 feet up from me, I live on the 3rd floor. So I look up and I see that he has birds tormenting him swooping down on him like little Japanese kamikaze planestrying to take out the enemy, it was like a scene from world war 2.
I started to feel bad because this little kitten of a cat being as much as a bitch as he was, was getting attacked by blue jays and has been stuck in a oak tree for the last 3 days and maybe more, no food no water and one day of rain and the weather was hot, and I know there must of been ants and insects biting him, he was probably getting all cramped up, he was just in a fucked up spot and stuck.
So as I watch these birds dive bomb this kitten I lit a joint, I started to yell out swing kitty swing at those bitch ass birds, swing and swipe, use your claws fuck those birds up, get one and eat it, I know your hungry get those little bitch birds with your claws, rip one out of the air, I wanted to see this cat snatch a bird out of the air like a scene from King Kong, but that didn't happen and the birds gave up, now this cat was just looking at me and he started to meow like a bitch, I felt bad because I knew he was hungry and probably scared, and by now I know that his parents can't help him, they were stray savage cats and were most likely scrounging dumpsters in the neighborhood somewhere or making cat sex in a dark ally or something.

📷Kitty ElevatorI started to think of elaborate ways to get this cat out of the tree, I wanted to climb up and get him but I was not a monkey and it most likely would have ended with me falling and breaking most my body, then I thought maybe I could get a bucket and rope and throw it up in the tree and make like a little kitty elevator for him to climb into and get lowered down. That didn't go so well because he was dumb enough to get stuck in the tree which meant he was not smart enough to climb into a bucket and get lowered down. The problem was getting to be that he hasn't had food📷 or water in days, I was waiting for him to just fall out of the tree from exhaustion. I had to walk away because there was nothing I could do to get him down, I looked up at him and said "yo you little bitch you need to get out of that tree" he replied with "meow" and I went back inside my house and started to brain storm ideas and search online for animal rescue places.
I started to call every animal association possible the ASPCA, the local veterinarians, fire stations, PETA, everything I could think of that had anything to do with animals, and they all asked me if "I have ever seen a dead cat in a tree" and I said "no" and they said "he will get hungry and climb down sooner or later" but its been almost a week and he didn't look like he could make it down, the branch that he was stuck on was almost at a 90 degree angle, the way a cats claws📷 are shaped he would have had to back down and he was not smart enough to do that, so being a little kitten who's parents abandoned him to go have sex in dumpsters, he had no one to help him.
I was in a pickle so was this bitch of a bear cat. I had a eureka moment, I could call a tree company and maybe they could come climb the tree grab him and bring him down. I started to call local arborists and I got a hold of this guy "Peach Tree Paul" who said he would come and get him down for $100, and I agreed to the price. "Peach Tree Paul" the tree conqueror arrived with a toy mouse on a string and began to throw it up in the tree trying to get this cat to chase the toy mouse down the tree, the cat got frightened and went about another twenty feet up into the tree.

📷Panda Bear the Cat"Peach Tree Paul" said fuck it time to climb, he broke out the harness and ropes and his little pouch to put the cat in, I believe he called it his pussy pouch, he started to climb the tree but the cat got frightened and climbed to the bulimic part of the tree, this dumb bitch of a cat climbed to where the branches were weak and skinny, the part of the tree that threw up instead of bloom, which made the rescue even more heroic, if "Peach Tree Paul" couldn't rely on the branches to hold his weight, he could not hook the ropes up.
"Peach Tree Paul" was not going to sacrifice himself and risk falling, but long story short he climbed up grabbed the cat and stuffed him in the pussy pouch and threw the pouch down, just kidding, he climbed down with the pussy pouch and asked me what I wanted to do with this pouch of pussy cat, either let him go, eat him, or keep him? I decided to keep the little bitch of a cat and named him the infamous Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Cat.

I started to develop a twitch and a craving for soccer, I started to wonder if my car could reach a 100 miles a hour on the straight away near the play ground for underdeveloped Mexican kids, all of a sudden I discovered I was a incredible soccer player, and I just wanted to play soccer and ride a motorcycles at the same time while blind folded, I started to crave sex with anything, rocks, sandpaper, stereo receivers, weed bongs, I stuck my hand in a bee hive and commenced to slapping white woman with arm tattoos, I started to teach Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Cat some Columbian jiu-jitsu the kind they teach to under privileged children in Bogota and rolled with him on a bed of thumbtacks, I had cravings to swallow rusty razors and wash them down with orange soda, and the most dangerous casual activity I couldn't get enough of was, I wondered about how many attempts it would take to achieve a victory in a wrestling match with a homeless methed up black man. Every Friday morning me and my training partner Mr. Peter Panda Bear the Cat would head down to the 7/11 and do classic wrestling taunts at the loiterers lingering by the dumpster. The Toxoplasmosis does not impede me from having a great pet panda bear cat and if you can save a animal from any situation that is not ideal for it, then do it! Do what you can and save these furry fuckers from the cages the pounds and animal control police keep them in, these scummy people who claim to love animals and answer telephones for a living, do not give a shit about saving the animals they just like to act sympathetic towards them, and most importantly don't tickle a feral cats nuts unless you want it to commit sexual acts with your toes at night.

Bitcoin, A Mine of Internet Gold

I had a class this semester called Impact of Technology. It's part of my core courses for civil engineering. Basically the course covers topics related to the advancements of technology and the repercussions due to that. One of the requirements was to write a paper illustrating a criteria or list of reasons why you are adopting a new technology. I chose Bitcoin obviously! The professor for this course is a dinosaur when it comes to any sort of recent technology, especially computers. I think he still uses Windows 98. With this in mind I had to approach the paper with the most simplistic explanation of what Bitcoin is and why I chose to adopt it. Also, one more thing to be mindful of, this paper was written in late March during the Cyprus fiasco and before the big bubble popped. Hopefully this can help some newbies understand Bitcoin better and give them an incentive to join. Here is the paper:
Bitcoin, A Mine of Internet Gold
Try to imagine a global currency that is not controlled by a central authority like governments or banks. Some people might find that hard to conceptualize. You may be asking yourself, "how can the whole world population use one currency?" That question has many answers. One of them is; through the use of internet technology and advanced programming algorithms. Bitcoin aims to use a combination of internet peer-to-peer (P2P) technology and an extremely secure algorithm that is metaphorically a mine of internet gold. "Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority; managing transactions and issuing Bitcoins are carried out collectively by the network. Through many of its unique properties, Bitcoin allows exciting uses that could not be covered by any previous payment systems."[1] This means that one can use Bitcoins to send money to anybody in the world almost instantly. There will be no more waiting for bank transfers and excessive bank wire fees. Bitcoin is like virtual cash money of the internet and you can use it to buy anything while remaining anonymous just as you would with cash. "Bitcoin is a currency, a protocol, and a software that enables instant peer to peer transactions, worldwide payments, low or zero processing fees ,and much more!"[1] I have already bought some Bitcoins and the following criteria will explain why.
But before I tell you why, you need to understand what Bitcoins are on a basic level and I feel the best way to explain that is to think of Bitcoin as internet gold. Bitcoin is essentially a computer algorithm that acts as a mine. This mine is a collection of encrypted computer code with addresses that point to areas with internet gold or none. In order to get the gold out of a mine miners are needed to dig away and sift through the rubble. For Bitcoin, miners are also needed but instead of digging and sifting through rubble they use computers to hash away through complicated mathematical equations in order to decrypt the internet gold mine and obtain Bitcoins in return. Once Bitcoins are discovered the entity that discovered them can claim them and either use them to buy something or sell to somebody who wants Bitcoins. The people that make up the Bitcoin network are free to trade Bitcoin amongst one another for services or goods. Like gold the quantity of Bitcoin is finite. There will never be more than 21 million Bitcoins ever mined due to the protocol limitations.
This leads me to the first point in my criteria for why I'm buying Bitcoin, scarcity. Currently approximately 10.957 million Bitcoins are in circulation. Bitcoin's algorithm makes it harder to find them as more are discovered. In other words it becomes more and more difficult to find some and miners require more effort in order to carry out the mathematical equations required to earn coins. In 2025 90% of all Bitcoins will be mined and 100% of all Bitcoins will be in circulation by 2140.[2] The algorithm determines the monetary inflation path ahead of time and is determined by unchangeable mathematics. Bitcoins that are lost to misfortune, like forgotten passwords, failed hard drives with no backup, etc, are lost forever and extremely improbable to recover. This also means there cannot ever be counterfeit coins. Thus, Bitcoin is the world's first, truly monetarily deflating currency.
That brings me to the next criteria which is Bitcoins divisibility. Each Bitcoin is divisible to 100 million base units called "Satoshi". That gives us a total of 2.1 quadrillion monetary units which is a sufficient supply to support a global economy. As Bitcoins become more scarce through attrition it is possible to mathematically "split" Bitcoins to increase the monetary base without creation inflation, it's very similar to splitting a stock. This way as the value of the Bitcoin increases people can still trade it using smaller monetary units so it is convenient.
A requirement of money is that they be durable. Good monetary units are not perishable like produce. Bitcoins are extremely durable because the algorithm keeps an accounting ledger of all transactions ever made over the network and cryptographic keys (that give everyone the ability to spend their Bitcoins) are distributed to hundreds of thousands of servers, networks, computers, and users around the world.
Money should also be portable and Bitcoins are highly portable in a variety of ways. You can access your Bitcoins over an internet connection, in paper wallets, physical coins and a concept called "Brain Wallets". If you have your cryptographic key and password memorized in your head then you can travel around the world and recovespend those Bitcoins from any computer where you feel safe. The best part is that the amount of money you can travel with is unlimited.
To add to the criteria Bitcoin is 100% transparent because it is a peer-to-peer network. There are no secrets inside the software or how it works. Everything is entirely auditable and verifiable because the protocol is 100% open source and can be viewed by anybody. This gives me great trust in the system because they are not trying to hold anything privately like banks or governments do.
Another reason I have Bitcoins is because they are anonymous to a certain degree. Bitcoin accounts are simply cryptographic keys that can be created at will and have no requirement to be registered with any entity. You can create a Bitcoin "account", spend money to it, and never have to reveal the who the owner of those keys are. This makes it very similar to cash money.
Further adding to the criteria is that Bitcoin is extensible. The Bitcoins protocol is highly extensible and it harnesses limitless capabilities and innovations that can be added. Some examples of these are auto executing contracts, escrow services, inheritances, etc... This means that as Bitcoin progresses and more uses become desired for it, extensions to the protocol can be added whenever.
Most importantly comes the attribute of value and Bitcoin has accumulated a significant amount of it since 2009 when it first started. In the early stages of Bitcoins it was quite easy to discover coins and the concept was not yet widespread so the value was as low as 0.05$ a coin. Yet over the years as scarcity and public awareness increased the Bitcoin has climbed to approximately 80$ a coin at the time of this writing. With the price increasing towards a market capitalization of almost 1billion dollars Bitcoin is becoming more mainstream.
People are turning to Bitcoin because of currency instability and losing trust in their banks. A good example of this can be seen in the Euro economic crisis currently unveiling; many Europeans are losing faith in their banking system and are turning to alternate currencies controlled by themselves. This is but one of the reasons why the value has grown so much. I find it best to look at the key similarities that Bitcoin has with precious metals that give them their ultimate value:
That being said I will keep buying more Bitcoins due to the above mentioned criteria consisting of the important attributes that I believe will make Bitcoin the very first mainstream online global currency technology. It's scarcity gives it the characteristic of being finite in quantity so only 21 million coins will ever be in circulation. It's attribute of almost infinite divisibility gives it the ability to still be usable as the value of the Bitcoin rises. They are extremely durable, impossible to counterfeit and easily portable to anywhere in the world. It is anonymous just like cash money so you can spend your money freely. The protocol is 100% open source so you know that the developers are not hiding anything from users. The most important reason why I'm investing in this currency is because of the potential store of value. I believe that Bitcoins are the currency of the future and that one day a significant amount of global trade will be paid for in Bitcoin. I've already quadrupled my initial investment and I'm confident that it will continue to grow.
